How to Shuffle Tarot Cards for Your Reading

How to Shuffle Tarot Cards for Your Reading

If you're new to tarot, one thing you'll certainly need to know is how to shuffle tarot cards. You really can shuffle them however you feel comfortable, but I want to offer a few common ways to shuffle tarot decks. I recommend getting comfortable with a few so you can shuffle without too much effort or issues.

How to Shuffle Tarot Cards for the First Time

So, you've found yourself a deck and you want to know how to shuffle tarot cards for the first time. When I receive a new deck, i usually go through it and start by just being with each individual card. When I'm ready to shuffle, I may pick from one of the methods below.

More often, I shuffle a deck for the first time by laying them out on a flat surface and literally mixing them around, much like a child might shuffle cards. It seems silly, but it allows you to see the backs of the cards and give your intuition a chance to jump in and tell you how to shuffle them. You can move the cards around for a few minutes and stack them into a pile for your tarot deck!

Methods of Shuffling Tarot Cards

There are several ways you can shuffle tarot cards. If you're first learning how to shuffle tarot cards, you probably are already aware of a few of these and how they can be useful or difficult.

1. The Traditional Card Shuffle

You've probably seen somebody shuffle regular playing cards or perhaps you know how to do so already. By splitting the deck in two, you can fan them into each other to get a good mix. With tarot cards, this may be a little more difficult due to their size. It's also important to note that this is perhaps the most stressful way to shuffle for the cards themselves.

2. The Overhand Shuffle

The overhand shuffle is a common shuffling technique and one that is pretty darn easy to do.  The overhand shuffle is done by simply taking a small portion of the deck and moving it from one side of the deck to the other. It essentially is a repeated cutting. By shuffling your tarot cards like this several times over, you will get a good shuffle and mix the cards up well. This is also a useful shuffle if you want to control if cards show reversed or not. Some tarot readings don't involve reversed cards, so this shuffle can help keep your deck straight!

3. The Spread-out Pile

As mentioned before when discussing how to shuffle tarot cards for the first time, this is a pretty simple and effective way to shuffle your cards. Lay them all out on a flat surface. You can do this with the cards face-up or face-down, although I usually do it with the cards face-down. Spread them out, mix them up, and create a pile. This will create a solid mix in your deck, and is one of the best ways to truly shuffle your tarot deck. It may not be pretty all the time, but it sure works!

4. The Grand Cut

If you've had a tarot reading before, you may have seen this technique of shuffling a tarot deck before. Essentially, you cut the deck into a bunch of small piles and set them out on the table or surface in front of you. Setting the different piles out, you can pick them up in a different order. You can do this a few times to get a good shuffle, and it can be a pretty way to mix your cards up.

Spreading or Dealing Tarot Cards

How you deal your cards will depend on the tarot spread you are using for your reading. People deal tarot cards a number of ways. First, if the deck is well-shuffled, you can draw a card from the top of the deck. This is probably the most common way to deal tarot cards into your spread.

You can also fan the cards out and allow the person you are doing the reading for to pick the card. They should be face-down, of course. I do this sometimes with shorter readings and ones really attached to the individual's own intuition or sense of things.

Finally, you can set out a few piles of cards, and have the individual pick which pile they'd like to draw the top card from. If you shuffle your tarot deck, cut it into seven piles, and ask which deck they'd like to draw a card from for this spot in the tarot spraed, you will get a good mix of randomness and the person's own intuition!

King of Cups Tarot Card Meaning

King of Cups Tarot Card Meaning

The King of Cups tarot card depicts the King sitting in his throne with a quality of calmness while the sea is turbulent around him. A fish may be found jumping in the background, and on the amulet hanging around his neck. You may also see the ship sailing across the sea behind him. Regardless of the chaos going on around him, the King sits with power and wisdom.

This is one of many tarot cards, and part of my effort to share what each of these cards may mean when pulled. If you'r interested in learning more about tarot card and their meanings, I recommend checking out this course below!

King of Cups Meaning in General

The King of Cups is a part of the suit of cups. The Cups are cards that represent emotions, love, relationships, and connection with other people. It's associated with the water element, and a symbol of fluidity and the power of healing. Generally, finding a Cups in your tarot spread is a sign of a need to connect with the heart, or perhaps the overuse of the heart.

Of course, where you find the King of Cups matters greatly. The King of Cups meaning depends largely on the situation. I'll cover a few common readings I do, and what the King of Cups may mean in each situation.

The King of Cups Timing

Depending on where in the tarot spread the King of Cups shows himself, it may have different meanings. Although the card retains a similar signficance, where it is pulled has a serious impact on what it may actually mean.

King of Cups Future

If the King of Cups is found in the future position, it signifies a coming calm and ease in one's life. It points toward the release of difficulties, emotional turmoil, and a mind/heart imbalance. Finding the King of Cups in a future tarot spread signifies a more balanced and calm future coming. This often means a resolution of problems or difficulties.

King of Cups Present

In the present place in a tarot spread, the King of Cups is telling us there is some sort of calm energy that can meet this situation with a powerful ease. It may be the individual's own balance, or somebody in their life. The King of Cups here can serve as a reminder of your own innate ability to meet the difficulties with calmness and wisdom of the heart. It may also point toward trusting somebody else who has these qualities.

King of Cups Past

When you find the King of Cups in the past, it may point toward a few things. First, it may be a reminder of the way the individual was in the past, and how their calmness impacted their experience and where they are today. The card may also be bringing up a calm person from the past that is a friend or family member. If so, the tarot card signifies a need to connect with this calmness of the person in order to progress.

King of Cups Reversed

When the King of Cups is reversed, it can mean a few different things. When the King shows himself reversed in a spread, it signifies the opposite qualities that you think of when you think of this card. A reversed King of Cups is a sign of toxicity, lack of emotional balance, and moodiness. It may be an individual who is deeply caring and loving, but falls into an emotionally controlling energy.

When reversed in a relationship or work spread, the reversed King of Cups is a sign of confusion, especially between the heart and the mind. You or the other person may be uncertain about the feelings present, experiencing lots of change emotionally, and/or falling into a desire to control the world around you.

You can check out our page How to Read Tarot Cards for my tips and suggestions on mastering the ability to read tarot cards.

King of Cups Love Outcome

The King of Cups in a love outcome can be quite interesting. As you can see in the card, there are little bits of chaos that cannot be controlled in this moment. However, there is some calm or harmony with this experience.

The King of Cups in a love reading signifies a gracious moment in a relationship. If the individual is currently in a relationship, this is a great sign. It means you can disagree healthily and work through difficulties together. If you're not in a relationship, it may point toward a readiness to connect with someone.

King of Cups Yes or No

The King of Cups is definitely a Yes. However, there's something more improtant to take note of if the King of Cups shows himself in a yes/no situation. If the King of Cups is found, it means the person already knew the answer within themselves. This can be a useful reminder to trust your own calm intuition in these times of difficulty or chaos.

The Queen of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning

The Queen of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning

The Queen of Pentacles is a tarot card that draws quite a bit of interest. It depicts a woman sitting on a beautiful throne with a gold coin in her hands. She is usually sitting in a lush garden with a small rabbit popping up from the ground. There are many different meanings for this card, depending on the question asked and how it is drawn.

It's important to remember that reading tarot is not as simple as knowing what the card signifies. In order to read tarot effectively, you have to actually learn how to read tarot cards. With that in mind, here are some basics to know about the Queen of Pentacles. If you're interested in learning more about how to read tarot cards, I have some courses I love and guides I recommend that you can check out by clicking the button below.

Queen of Pentacles Timing

queen of pentacles tarot card.jpg

When drawing tarot cards, it matters greatly where the card is pulled. The Queen of Pentacles, like many other tarot cards, has many meanings that vary from position to position.

Queen of Pentacles Future

If the Queen of Pentacles is drawn in the future position, it may mean a few different things. The most common interpretation surrounds financial success. However, this depends on the individual. Finding the Queen in a future position may signify prosperity of a different kind, such as emotional, psychic, or spiritual.

Often, the Queen of Pentacles in the future points toward a need to be pragmatic. By utilizing given skills and practical behaviors, you can move toward prosperity. It's important to remember that propserity doesn't always look how we think it will. We may be wanting financial security, but what we really need is a blossoming of the emotional heart.

In the Past

The Queen of Pentacles is a card that really focuses on the future, so finding this tarot card in a past position can be interesting. Mediums and psychics use different tarot spreads, but many will have a position representing the past. If the Queen of Pentacles is pulled here, it may mean a few things.

First, it may be related to love in your life. If the Queen is found here, it may signify a great love has passed, or that you have recently encountered somebody with whom you will fall in love. It is not directly good or bad, and doesn't point toward happiness or sadness.

Another interpretation of this card is actually not related to the past. When the Queen is pulled into a past position in a spread, it may point toward a natural inclination toward caring. Sometimes, a Queen in a past pile may simply be there to remind the individual of their capacity to create safety and security with their innate quality of love.

In the Present

Although a generalization, the Queen of Pentacles in the present position usually represents a supporting feminine influence. This doesn't necessary mean a female in your life, but someone or something with a feminine energy. Specifically, this energy will push, encourage, and support you toward more prosperity in the near future.

Queen of Pentacles Reversed

If you find a Queen of Pentacles reversed, it can serve as a place of great insight. As a loving, caring, nurturing energy, the reversed card points toward selfishness, misguided priorities, or perhaps a need to let go. Like many cards, there isn't one right or wrong way all of the time.

A reversed Queen of Pentacles essentially means an energy is out of whack. This may mean that the individual is stuck in their own needs and desires, and not tuning into others. Like any reading, this is a call to action as it serves as some insight into your experience.

If you are caring for someone or in a relationship, the reversed tarot card here can mean it is time to let go. When we care for someone deeply and provide for them, there may come a time when letting go is necessary. A reveresed Queen signifies the energy is a bit messed up and it's time to get it back in line by letting go.

Queen of Pentacles Love Questions

Many of the readings I do surround love in an individual's life. If the Queen of Pentacles finds her way into the tarot card spread, it may mean a few things. If the person with whom you're in love is single and available, the Queen suggests prosperity in your love life. This may not mean a lasting relationship, but it does point toward commitment.

Similarly, if the person with whom you are in love is already with somebody or married, it points toward commitment. The Queen is loving, nurturing, and highly committed. If the person is not available, it suggests the individual is already committed with love to the person.

Yes or No Interpretation

The Queen of Pentacles is intensely pragmatic and well-organized. Pulling the Queen with a yes or no question definitely points toward yes. There isn't much room for interpretation here, and most psychics, mediums, and tarot card readers will see this card as a firm yes. It's important to know that the Queen of Pentacles also means you need to love yourself and be gentle with your journey and your question.

Tarot Cards - Get a Tarot Deck, Learn to Read Tarot, and Get Your Reading

Tarot cards are a common tool used by many psychics and mediums. Even if you have not been to a psychic before, you've likely seen these decks in movies or on the television. Learn a bit about Tarot Cards, their history, how to get starting reading tarot, and get a free reading!

What are Tarot Cards?

Tarot cards are playing cards used today for tarotology, or the practice of using cards to gain insight and answer questions. Originally used to play games, reading tarot cards is a form of cartomancy, or the reading of cards to find meaning.

A traditional tarot deck contains 78 cards. Twenty-two are Major Arcanes and fifty-six are Minor Arcanes. Much like modern playing cards, there are four suits. Although this is the standard, many mediums and psychics choose to use decks they have built themselves, often with a different number of cards.

A Brief History of Tarot Cards

reading tarot cards.jpg

Tarot cards were first used in the mid-15th century in Europe. The cards were used in Italy for games called tarot and tarocchini. In the 18th century, tarot decks were used for divination in Bologna, an area in Northern Italy. This is the first known use of the tarot deck for cartomancy.

Over the years, tarot cards have grown in popularity. Wealthy families had custom-drawn decks, with some of these decks surviving today. Many popular tarot decks have remained the same for over a hundred years, such as the well-known Rider-Waite deck.

Reading Tarot Cards

Reading tarot cards is not exactly about reading anything other than your own intuition. Tarot cards are not believed to hold any deeply special power. Instead, the user is utilizing the cards drawn as a sign from the universe or Source about where to look for insight. Someone reading tarot cards is using their own connection, insight, and intuition to interpret the drawn cards.

Generally, certain tarot cards have specific meanings. Some readers are strict with the cards drawn and their meanings, while others allow more freedom from creativity and interpretation. The tarot card meanings are just suggestions or jumping off points for most, not serving as a rule.

Finding Clarity in the New Year

Finding Clarity in the New Year

One of the things about the New Year tends to be resolutions. People set New Year's resolutions and often forget about them a few days or weeks later. We often set intentions such as working out more, eating healthy, or picking up a new hobby. Instead, we can tune into something deeper to set intentions any day that are more rooted in love, passion, and truth. You may try seeking help from a psychic or medium to get in touch with these deeper goals.

The Problem with Resolutions

Resolutions can be really great, and help us in our lives. Whether it's a New Year's resolution or an intention we set on any given day or week, it can be helpful in our growth. However, many intentions, especially New Year's resolutions, end up backfiring on us.

When we make a resolution, we often end up investing too much happiness in the achieving of our goal. If we don't go to the gym every day as planned, we may begin to beat ourselves up. We lose steam as we beat ourselves up, and this can take us into a downward spiral and away from our intention.

The resolutions people set around the New Year are often related to something on the surface, such as looking better, eating better, or getting a new job. These are all wholesome things and healthy for us, but we don't always take the time to really connect with ourselves on a deeper level. We aren't listening to anything greater than our egos often.

Psychic Intentions.jpg

Tuning into Deeper Intentions

You don't have to have any special power to tune into your deeper intentions. We all have some psychic power, and the ability to listen to the universe within us. We all have it, regardless of circumstances.

You may call it God, the universe, intuition, the soul, the Source, him or her, or whatever you please, but we all have it within us. Sometimes it is louder than others, but it's always there. All we have to do is tune into it and listen. We can turn toward this deeper truth for more guidance with our intentions and resolutions.

Rather than just going with a resolution that comes from ego or the surface, we can connect with something greater in order to generate intentions that really mean something to us. These deeper resolutions are more deeply and intimately connected with ourselves and the universe around and within us.

When we have a resolution that comes from this deeper space, the added connection helps us stay with our resolution. When we are connected on a foundational level with our intentions, we are driven more wholeheartedly. We may have the same intention as before, but because we are fully connected to the universe, we are able to stay with it.

To connect with your deeper intention, you can try a few things. First, meditation is a wonderful practice. By sitting in silence and quieting the mind, this intuitive voice may come forth. You may also try spending time with Mother Nature, as her serenity can offer the opportunity to really hear. Finally, seek help from a psychic or medium.
